Managing digital for an international sporting event
I am now over 2 years into my role as the Manager Digital at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. When I started the role I knew it was a short term gig (if you consider nearly 3 years short term), and I had a good idea of what I was getting into. However, nobody could have prepared me for how huge this role and organisation is. Putting on a global multi-sport event is no mean feat and as digital continues to evolve and develop, the task for digital managers is every expanding.
What does digital mean at the Commonwealth Games?
The remit of digital at GC2018 is to look after website, mobile app, social media, enews and other necessary digital platforms such as asset management tools, internal digital collaboration tools and more. Within each of these are a multitude of programs, skills, channels, platforms and more, but what is important across all of them is the team. I have had the joy of building an amazing team as part of my role as Digital Manager at GC2018 and working with them and seeing their strong culture and high production is one of my greatest outcomes.
